Yamatoya opened in 1912 as a bag shop.

Its main business was providing skilled artisans with custom-made products such as men’s tobacco pouches, smoking pipes, handbags, obi ornaments, and precious metals. After the war, it was one of the first shops to use zippers, and produced and sold Japan’s first obi material Boston bag.

It is currently separated into a jewelry department and a handbag and kimono accessory department.
